Gaza Hospital Chief Denied Medications in Israeli Solitary Confinement
Nasser Odeh told media that Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya "suffers from various chronic diseases and needs to obtain medicines and medical treatment on a regular basis, which he has been deprived of recently."
Odeh confirmed he last visited the detained physician on May 26, before Dr. Abu Safiya was transferred on June 3 to solitary confinement at Nafha Prison, located in southern Israel.
"Abu Safiya is not receiving the essential medications he needs, and we don't have any communication or updates regarding his condition," Odeh warned.
The hospital director was first taken into custody in late 2024 following an Israeli military raid on Kamal Adwan Hospital amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza. During a recent visit, the lawyer disclosed that Abu Safiya was "handcuffed and shackled," with the meeting carried out inside a "room monitored by cameras."
"We talked through phone from behind a glass barrier, with guards standing alongside both Abu Safiya and me," Odeh recounted.
He further noted that the visit was "very short, making it difficult for the detainee to discuss his personal matters due to fear of reprisal or punishment from the guards present during the visit."
According to Palestinian figures, Israel has killed more than 73,000 Palestinians and injured over 173,000 — the majority of them women and children — since launching its military campaign in Gaza in October 2023. Even following a ceasefire that took effect on Oct. 10, 2025, the Gaza Health Ministry reports that Israeli forces have killed at least 961 Palestinians and wounded more than 3,000 others in near-daily strikes.
