Former Google Engineer Sues Over Dismissal Linked to Israel Protest

(MENAFN) A former artificial intelligence engineer at Google DeepMind has filed a legal claim in the United Kingdom alleging that he was unfairly dismissed due to his participation in protests related to the company’s contracts with Israel.

According to reports, the case was submitted to a British employment tribunal after the engineer claimed he was fired following internal activism concerning Google’s business agreements involving cloud computing and AI services used in cooperation with Israeli government-linked programs.

The dispute relates in part to large-scale contracts, including a reported $1.2 billion agreement between Google and Amazon to provide AI and cloud infrastructure services in cooperation with Israel. These arrangements have previously sparked internal employee protests.

The former employee reportedly distributed flyers inside DeepMind’s London offices stating: “Google provides military AI to forces committing genocide” and “Is your paycheck worth this?” He also sent emails to colleagues and encouraged unionization efforts.

The engineer, who is of Palestinian origin, claims in his lawsuit that he was dismissed for expressing ethical objections to the company’s involvement in military-related technology and argues that his actions constituted whistleblowing activity.

Google, however, disputes this account and says the employee’s version of events “does not accurately reflect the facts.” The company maintains that he resigned rather than being unfairly terminated.

Reports also reference the broader controversy surrounding contracts signed in 2021 between Google, Amazon, and Israel, which allegedly include provisions restricting the companies from suspending services even under internal or external pressure from employees or shareholders.

The issue has drawn wider scrutiny amid accusations related to Israel’s military campaign in Gaza following the 2023 Hamas attack, with critics arguing that advanced cloud and AI systems play a role in operational capabilities. Israeli officials have previously acknowledged the importance of such technology partnerships in defense operations.

The case highlights growing tensions inside major tech firms over the use of artificial intelligence and cloud infrastructure in geopolitical and military contexts.
