UN Chief expresses worry over evacuation order from IDF in Gaza
“Civilians must be respected and protected,” said Guterres’ spokesperson, Stephane Dujarric, during a press briefing. He also condemned the deadly Israeli airstrike that hit a beachfront café in Gaza City, killing at least 21 people — mostly women and children — according to Palestinian medical and security sources.
The strike, which targeted a location west of the al-Shati refugee camp, has drawn widespread concern. Witnesses reported that at least one missile was fired by an Israeli aircraft, causing widespread destruction and numerous injuries.
The UN chief also reiterated his call for the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages and welcomed the ongoing mediation efforts aimed at halting the violence. Guterres again urged all parties to reach a permanent ceasefire.
The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) noted that most of the Gaza Strip remains under evacuation and displacement orders. It emphasized that Israel, as the occupying power, has a legal obligation to protect civilians under international humanitarian law — no matter where they are or where they are ordered to go.
The humanitarian crisis in Gaza continues to worsen as displacement, destruction of civilian infrastructure, and casualty numbers rise steadily amid the conflict.
